"ender's game" -- yea! as to your call for suggestions, "wuthering heights" is a GREAT classic but you might find "poisonwood" (one of your italicized ones, i noticed) more reader friendly. my .02 worth anyway :)

A Handmaid's Tale, while not light reading, is fast, well-written, and incredibly thought-provoking. I would say it's one of my favorite books.
